Singapore visa: Things to know

To travel to Singapore you do not need a visa because Vietnam and Singapore are in ASEAN. However, to be able to legally come to Singapore to study and work you need to apply for a visa. So, which Singapore student visa do you need to prepare? What are the necessary documents? The answer will be answered shortly by Globalway:

1. Singapore visa

The Singapore student visa is called by the Singapore Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) as the Student Pass. Perhaps because of this name, many people cannot help misunderstanding that the Student Pass is a compulsory license if you want to study in the island nation of Lion.

In fact, if you have the following documents or conditions, you do not need the Student Pass:

You have changed your citizenship into a Singapore citizen (permanent resident - PR)

You have a dependent visa (Dependent pass -DP)

The duration of your course is short enough and only requires a short-term visit pass. For Vietnamese citizens, the Short-term visit pass is a customs stamp stamped on the passport, allowing you to stay in Singapore for 30 days, and can be extended up to 90 days.

Conclusion: Student Pass is not a compulsory condition to study in Singapore. The Student Pass is only a visa to help you stay in Singapore long enough to pursue the course.

2. How do international students register for Student Pass?

Usually, the school that accepts students will help students register the Student Pass, which comes with a fee. The process goes like this:

  • Students will receive the forms and a list of required documents to prepare and return to the school.
  • The school sends all documents and applications to ICA on your behalf.
  • When the Visa Student pass is approved, students will receive a PDF document to print out and bring to Singapore with your passport.
  • During your first days in Singapore, students come to ICA headquarters to present the original documents and get the official Student Pass.

3. How long will a Visa Student Pass be valid?

This depends on the course you are applying for. Visa will be valid by the total time of the courses you have registered and paid for. The minimum period of a Student Pass is 90 days (3 months). If less than ICA, you should take advantage of short-term visas.

Example: You sign up for an English course with the British Council in Singapore. Once you pass the entrance exam, the British Council will help you register for a Student Pass. Visa expires 1 to 2 weeks after the course ends. If you decide to study longer after that time at the British Council or another educational institution, you will have to extend your visa.

4. Requirements for applying for a Student Pass

There is only one requirement: You must be admitted to a full-time course at a recognized institution (certificate) in Singapore. Full time course means the program will take place on weekdays. Many courses are similar to Full-time courses but are not eligible for international students to be granted a Student Pass. So you should ask the school before registering.

5. Can students work in Singapore with the Student Pass?

The answer is no. Students are allowed to work part time as prescribed, and full time on holidays. If you want to work in Singapore, you must apply for one of the following visas:

Work Holiday Pass - for students and graduate students aged 18-25 who are currently attending or graduated from the top 200 universities in Australia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, United Kingdom, USA.

Training Employment Pass - for interns at an organization), or a person with a fixed monthly salary of at least S $ 3000.

6. Is the Visa Student pass denied?

Ensuring the above conditions does not mean that you will receive a Student Pass, but only a condition for you to apply for a Student Pass. What is the difference between these two?

Although rare, there are some cases where Student Passes may be removed. If you are in this unlucky situation, you will get the reason why you were rejected. Based on experience and interviews with many school representatives, here are a few typical reasons:

  • ICA suspects you didn't really come to Singapore to study:

There are people who want to stay in Singapore for a long time, and the course is what helps them achieve that goal. For example, when you first come to Singapore with a short-term visa, then apply for the Student Pass as soon as the duration of the short-term visa is nearly over. This is what makes the ICA suspicious.

  • ICA thinks that you cannot afford to live in Singapore:

In this case, they do not actually disqualify your application but only ask for a deposit of S $ 5000. This amount will be refunded upon completion of the course.

  • ICA thinks you're not like a student:

Age, diploma, or other personality makes you not like a typical student at the school you plan to attend. This will also cause ICA to refuse to issue you a visa.
